Downsizing Help for Older New Mexicans

First, A Question Worth Asking

Before anyone talks about what to get rid of, ask this: does this person actually want to move?

A lot of the time the answer is no. And a lot of the time they do not have to. Families arrive assuming the house has to be emptied, when the real goal is making it safe enough to stay in.

So we start there.

If They Are Staying

Paths come first. A hallway wide enough for a walker. Stairs with nothing stacked on them. A clear route from bed to bathroom, because that is where night falls happen. Doors that open all the way, so help can get in and they can get out.

Then the kitchen and the bathroom. Those two rooms decide whether someone can live alone.

Then bedrooms. Then everything else, whenever they are ready.

One day of that work changes more than families expect. The house did not need to be empty. It needed to be walkable.

If They Are Moving

Then the job is bigger, and slower on purpose.

A house and two outbuildings have to become one room at an assisted living place. That is a hard thing to do to a person. We carry items over to be looked at. We do not decide for them. And we do not talk over their head to the daughter standing right there, which happens to older people constantly and which they always notice.

Houses That Have Been In One Family A Long Time

This comes up here more than most places, and it changes how we work.

A house that has held the same family for four or five generations is not a place anyone downsizes casually. What is in it is not clutter to them. It is inheritance, and much of it truly is. Tools, santos, weavings, photographs, ledgers, letters in Spanish going back further than anyone alive can remember.

We slow way down in those houses. Anything that might matter gets set aside for the family to decide on later. Nobody on our crew is qualified to judge what a family should keep. Pretending otherwise is how heirlooms end up in a dumpster.

Distance Changes Everything Here

Much of this state is a long way from anywhere. Someone in Catron or Union County might go two weeks without a visitor. A situation can build for years before anyone sees it.

It also means help arrives rarely and leaves early. We book longer windows for rural jobs so the drive does not eat the visit.

If An Agency Called Us

Discharge planners and care coordinators reach out often. Someone is cleared to go home and the house is the only thing left in the way.

Saying It Without A Fight

Name the one thing worrying you. Talk about the stairs, not the house. Ask for one small change, not a whole plan. And bring in someone outside the family, because an outsider can say what a son cannot.

What fails: a dumpster nobody agreed to, a deadline, or doing it while they are out.
